i never, ever get tired of embroidering dirty words on dishtowels. NEVER.
this is the second of my sad stain towels, this one is a little wine stain. so sad, yet so cute.
i also found some old hankies i made while cleaning up my inventory. they are not 100% cotton, which is why i stopped making them for a while. however, i found a place where i can get cotton hankies so i'll be making more! until then, there are a few of the poly-cotton blends that would make great stocking stuffers.
even though they aren't all cotton, they are incredibly soft.
this is what my mom always calls my dad's hankies. hankies aren't just for men, though. no way. i carry one with me everywhere! they're great; i use them to clean my eyeglasses, to wipe my nose, to clean myself up if i accidentally spill coffee on my shirt (which happens all the damn time to me), or to clean up any of the other messes i often find myself making. they're environmentally sound, and people get all nostalgic when you whip one out. "oh, my uncle used to carry one of those around," or "my grandfather always had a hankie on him," or even "my mom always said a lady carried her own hankie."
even if you don't buy my hankies, i still think you should think about using them. let's bring back the hankie!
ordering information and fun stuff over here, as always.
tomorrow is the first day of december. december. i'm not exactly sure how that happened. in any case, i've put together a humble list of places to help you find wonderful gifts for the people you love this holiday season.
plain mabel. this site has great treats, including the switchring. i love the switchring. it's adorable and modular and i was lucky enough to get one in red.
etsy. if you are looking for something totally unique and handmade, then you will love this site. you can search the contents by color, by description, by time posted and even by price. you are sure to find something here you'll love. i bought some lovely soap from this seller; it smells wonderful and makes waking up much more fun. they also have a massive selection of cute one-inch buttons. you know how i feel about one-inch buttons.
reprodepot fabrics. this has to be one of my favorite fabric sites ever. maybe you want to surprise your loved one with some inspiration in the form of a yard or two of delicious fabric?
subversive cross stitch. a girl after my own heart. there can never be enough embroidered swear words in the world. never. what makes it even more fun is that you can give someone something they can make themselves. i love getting that kind of gift.
thea starr. if you can find a cuter hair tie anywhere, i will be a monkey's uncle.
copacetique. another wonderful online store full of handcrafted goodies. plus, janice is adorable and the zine is a great read.
last but not least, giant robot. giant robot is a magazine, a store, and a restaurant. you might want to give a subscription to the magazine, or you might want to give them a t-shirt. i like this site because i've bought both my sister and my father a gift here.
if you'd like a pinprick item custom made for you, please send your request to me no later than december 14th! if you want something in time for christmas, please order by december 20th, okay? okay!
i have been making onesies, but my sister is also busy making a baby right now and i have such a hard time parting with anything! thank goodness she finally told me to knock it off, baby has enough clothes for now. (my new niece has a whole lot of clothes with skulls and monsters on them and she won't even be here until january. i may have been a gotten a bit too excited.)
this is a long-sleeved carter onesie, nice and thick and soft. it's a size small, 3 month, or 8-11 pound baby-sized. all cotton, made by me, and it can be yours for $25.
how did november get here? the past month just flew past. i hope you all had a happy halloween! i spent mine in vegas, which was super fun. i took a lot of photos, played some pinball, and for the most part watched other people gamble. i did enjoy some fun with the slot machines, but overall i was way too distracted by all the people and bright shiny lights to stay focused on it for long.
now i'm in my new state, settling in. not all of my things have made it here yet, but i did bring along some towels to work on. i got this blue beauty done, and here's introducing the first of my new "Sad Stain" line:
isn't he cute? the cool thing about the Sad Stain series is that as you use the towels and they get naturally, um, "colored," the design will be even cuter. i'm making all of them in grody colors; this is sort of a nice muddy grey, i have a good beet/red wine color, and some grassy green as well as others. they've been really fun to work on, i hope you like them!
there are lots more coming, since right now i'm sort of looking of for a job and watching a lot of netflix movies. there is nothing i like better than watching a movie and embroidering. my goal is to also get more stock ready so that when the holiday's roll around i'll be prepared.
not the blog, silly, but out of my apartment. i'm moving far, far away and so if you need a onesie or something you should order it before Oct. 28th. after that, i'll be on the road for at least a week or so and won't have much access to a computer or to my stock.
since i'm going to be a long road trip i might get some work done in the car! whoo! i wonder what sorts of cool things i'll see on my trip. don't worry, i'm bringing my sketchbook and camera(s) with me, so i don't forget anything. we're taking a small detour through las vegas, which is exciting for me because i've never seen vegas. all those bright, shiny lights and the cocktails you can drink right on the street! i can hardly wait.
i am really excited about my move, and promise to update you when i get to my new town. i'm sure i'll have lots of new fun things for you to see.
but not completely! nope, my trusty and lovely pen pal came though with a lovely set of copy kraken pins. you have no idea how these made my day. in fact, the entire time i've been slaving away over a hot copier, i've gotten more than my fair share of treats through the mail, and if i haven't thanked each and every one of you for them, i'd like to do that now. thanks!
back to the buttons! i'm roadtripping with a friend to my new home, and i'd like to go to vegas when i blow this popstand. if you'd like to support my trip to the happiest place on earth, please feel free to buy a copy kraken of your own! they are a bit more expensive ($2.50) than my other buttons, but please remember you are supporting a good cause; amanda having cocktails on the strip and taking photos of showgirls and neon. like with all button purchases shipping is FREE. please make sure you specify which color you would like; the top button is "green" and the bottom button is "less green." or if you don't care, please choose, "don't care." i love you, buy buttons.
Update! since i'm in my new home, these buttons are now $1.50. still a bit more expensive than the regular pinprick buttons, but that's because i only had fifty made.
i wish i didn't have a day job. if i didn't have a day job, i could stay home all day long and embroider things with dirty words and imaginary monsters. then again, the day job means i get to see all sorts of crazy stuff that makes me think of even crazier things that i end up embroidering on baby shirts. it's a vicious cycle.
if i'm not making stuff fast enough for you, you can now buy buttons! they are $1 each, and no matter how many you buy, you will not have to pay shipping. because i love you that much. remember to tell me what color you want, though, okay? okay!
last week i got a very nice email from julie, who runs the fabulous site, subversive cross stitch. first off, her work is incredible. you know how i feel about putting swear words all over the house, about subverting ideas about domesticity, and her kits help everyone put a much needed "fuck" or two on the wall. her cross stitch designs have been in some of my favorite magazines, and her kits have sold in places like urban outfitters. in a word, she's hella cool. shes' super-ultra-mega cool. she gets cooler, though (if that's at all possible) by being so kind as to mention me in her last newsletter. to say i'm flattered would be an understatement. i am blushing from head to toe.
thanks julie!(now go to the website and see all her great designs. now!)
my boys tiernan and jude were talking about rainbows the other day, and that got me to thinking. they've got a thing for rainbows, so i had to put my twisted auntie A spin on them. since they're only two i can still dress them as i wish! oh, this power is intoxicating, albeit fleeting.
and the sleepy tears make a return in brown. i like the brown and grey together. this would be a great shirt for kid who likes to get dirty. of course, isn't that all kids?
and the sad little monster in turqoise. ooh, i want to pinch his cheeks.
you know the drill, if you'd like one go over to the gallery and pick one out!
You can now buy pinprick baby gear at an honest-to-goodness store! 20 Twenty is a vintage men's, women's and children's shop in dowtown Ballard, WA (across the street from the tractor tavern). Along with carrying a variety of vintage clothes for everyone in the family, they also carry vintage and new accessories, jewelry and art by local artists. If you're in seattle, you should check it out.
